GIMP for Unix-like systems

If available, the official package from your Unix-like distribution is the recommended method of installing GIMP!

The flatpak build is new and has known limitations, though it will likely provide faster updates, following GIMP releases closely.
Therefore choose your installation medium according to your needs.

Flatpak build available in: i386, x86-64, ARM and AArch64.

Flatpak additional instructions

The flatpak link above should open your software installer and prompt you to install GIMP. Yet it may not work out-of-the-box on some platforms since the flatpak technology is new. If that is the case, ensure flatpak is installed and if clicking the link still does not prompt to install GIMP, then manually install by command line:

flatpak install https://flathub.org/repo/appstream/org.gimp.GIMP.flatpakref

Once installed, it will be made available exactly the same way as other applications (menus, desktop overview, or any specific application launch process used by your desktop).
If this is not the case, we suggest to report a bug to your desktop or distribution asking for proper support of flatpak. In the meantime, you can still run it by command line (not as the recommended method, only a workaround):

flatpak run org.gimp.GIMP//stable

This installation will also provide regular update. You don't have to come back on this page and install again (it will not work!) when a new version of GIMP is released. Instead if your distribution and/or desktop has a good support for flatpak, it should propose to perform updates.
Once again, if your distribution does not have proper support, you can always fall back to using the following command line:

flatpak update

Systems without flatpak support

GIMP can also run on Solaris and is available for the BSD family of systems such as FreeBSD and OpenBSD.

Note: the currently available package provides GIMP 2.10.14 and has not yet updated to the latest version, GIMP 2.10.22. We're working on that, please check back later.

Native build

The official GIMP 2.10 DMG installer (linked above) is a stock GIMP build without any add-ons. Just open the downloaded DMG and drag and drop GIMP into your 'Applications' folder.

Macports

An easy way to compile and install GIMP and other great Free software on your Mac is by using Macports. The installer allows you to choose from a large directory of packages. To install gimp using Macports, you simply do sudo port install gimp once you have Macports installed.

Last we checked, the GIMP port file pointed to the current stable release and we have reports from people who've built GIMP successfully this way.

Homebrew

Homebrew is similar to Macports and provides packages (aka formulas) to install, either by compiling them from source or by using pre-made binaries. There are indications that there is now a formula for GIMP, installable with: brew tap homebrew/cask && brew cask install gimp.

NOTE! Please be aware that it was announced recently that Homebrew is using analytics. To turn this off in homebrew then run: brew analytics off

Fink

Fink is a package repository that offer mostly precompiled binaries. It provides the apt-get command known to e.g. Debian and Ubuntu users, and installing GIMP is as easy as sudo apt-get install gimp once you have installed the Fink installer.
If there's no binary package, then fink install gimp will compile GIMP from source.

Disclaimer: we haven't been able to determine if it is possible to install or build recent GIMP from Fink. Last we checked, GIMP 2.6.12 appears to be the most recent GIMP package that is offered there.

GIMP for Windows

Supported OS: Windows 7 or over

Well, who does not like free stuff? A great feature due to which a lot of users are attracted towards it. IrfanView comes in the form of exe file which is 1.6 MB in size. If you download the full version which contains all the plugins then it will take 10MB space of your disk space. With this really small size IrfanView offers helpful and variety of features.

Image Editing

IrfanView lets you edit your photos. You can do everything possible to edit the images with the help of IrfanView. Image rotation, resizing, and cropping tools are available in the software. You can also makes changes in contrast, brightness, gamma level tint or even change color depth manually or automatically. IrfanView also enables you to change the file format conveniently. The software has also the ability to modify many image files in one go using batch process option.

When you first open the software there you will find many tools to edit your photos. To browse photos just click the folder option and select the desired image. When the image is opened, at the bottom bar you will see some information given about that image.

Original size of the photos which is 760 x 505 x 24 BPP in the above image, then, serial no. of the current images 9th out of 49, after that there is zoom percentage 100%, memory size and disk size then there is the date and at last time is given.

If you want to get more information about a particular picture then click the ‘i’ button. It will show detailed information of the image such as filename, directory, full path, resolution, original size, current size, print size, original colors, current colors, Disk size, current memory size, file date and many more.
IrfanView also allows text overlay on the images. Many filters are also there like sharper, blur, Adobe 8BF, filter factory and many more which will help you to include different effects into your images.

Screen savers and slide shows

This feature of IrfanView allows you to create screen savers and slide shows without any hassle. You can also add mp3 audio to the slide show to make it more attractive.

There are many advance options for slide show. You can set when to start a particular slide show such as automatically after 5 sec, randomly after 3 sec, on mouse click or keyboard input. You can also enable or disable Loop slide show, Hide mouse cursor and many more as per your wish. Play modes can also be changed. You can play slide show on full width mode or select to show images/movies with the original size.

The software allows you to add text to your slide shows and change background color using color platelets. Before saving any slide show you can check it using Play Slide show to ensure that there is not error in that.

TWAIN to scan images from scanner

IrfanView supports TWAIN which helps in scanning images from your scanner. TWAIN also enables you to scan images from other devices too such as digital camera, video-capture cards etc. Click File menu and select TWAIN, this will connect your device to the software.

Icons

IrfanView features a handy Icon creator tool. It allows you to create icons or favicons. Creating icon is really easy process. Just select the section of the image which you want to convert into an icon then set the size 16px x 16px and save that in .icofile format. That’s it, your icon is ready.

Plugins

There are many plugins available in IrfanView. You can get all these plugin in one go by downloading executable files which is available in the zip format. There are two packages of zip files. One package contains all the multimedia plugins such as Mp3, Nero, Quicktime, I_V Player, Med, Real Audio and many more. The other package includes plugins for Crw, Dicom, EaFSh, Format, B3D, JPEG2000, Ics, PotoCD, PNGOUT, Wbz, Wsq, Btf etc.

Easy installation process

The installation process is quite easy. But as we know IrfanView was available for Windows only but now you can download it to your Mac too. Follow the given instructions to download IrfanView for Mac.

First you need to download and install WineBottler 1.2.3. You can download it from here.
After you have finished installing, open the WineBottler and select “install Predefined Prefixes”.
There you will find many options, find IrfanView and click install.
A pop up window will come up asking you to save the application, you just select the location and click save.
After the completion of installation process, you will receive “Prefix created successfully” message.
There you go! IrfanView is installed and you can enjoy it.
